When I first saw Zedd, Maren Morris and Grey’s collaboration pop up in my emails I had a little eye roll moment because I was like “here we go again, another country meets pop-EDM crossover”. It’s the current chart trend and it’s becoming a little predictable and boring. However I was pleasantly surprised when I actually listened to “The Middle” because it was a refreshing and enjoyable pop track that transformed Maren Morris’ country vocal delivery into the one of a well established pop artist. This is also the first time Zedd has worked with a country artist and I don’t really see him making it a common occurrence as he always jumps between different vocal styles. But this song impresses with it’s DIY electronic production that incorporates the sound of a car indicator into the main beat which is quite cool. Structure wise it’s a bit similar to his Alessia Cara collaboration “Stay” but that’s not totally a bad thing because he knows it works. The song looks at a relationship falling apart and needing to find a middle ground to try and keep it together. “Why don’t you pull me close? Why don’t you come on over? I can’t just let you go. Oh baby, why don’t you just meet me in the middle?”. It’s a highly emotional song which is perfectly uplifted by the EDM production. It’s catchy, enjoyable and a total bop.
