SINGLE REVIEW: Kimbra – Top Of The World
Kimbra is completely changing up her sound for her forthcoming third studio album “Primal Heart’ and I couldn’t be more excited. The New Zealand songstress has always shown a very quirky and theatrical side through her music and imagery but this new era shows her stripping it back and getting a bit more vulnerable with her fans. Her second single “Top Of The World” explores the want and need to constantly exceed at everything you do but also not receiving the recognition you want. It’s a constant battle that you end up having with yourself over what is more important to you and to keep striving. For this track she delivers a heavier DIY electronic sound that is made up of gritty alt-pop synths that also have a strong hip-hop influence. Her vocals are also experimented with by using different electronic effects that add a unique texture and layering. The hook is ridiculously catchy and will instantly get stuck in your head after a first listen. “I’m on top, I’m on top, I’m on top of the world. See me run, see me run, see me run with the girls”. It’s a very unique and different song and isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea but Kimbra has never done anything to fit in. She’s always been a bit strange and that’s what I love about her.
