SINGLE REVIEW: Hayley Kiyoko – Feelings
Hayley Kiyoko is quite the experimental singer-songwriter. She dives into her emotions with pure honesty while throwing together a unique DIY sound that is a fusion of pop, RNB and electronica. Her debut album is expected in 2018 and she’s just dropped the follow up single to the Spotify hit “Sleepover” which hears her continuing the heavier electronica influence. “Feelings” is quite the emotional and reflective track which you wouldn’t guess from it’s title. (Obviously that sentence was very sarcastic). But she reflects on her feelings towards someone and embraces them instead of trying to hide them and act all cool. “I over-communicate and feel too much. I just complicate it when I say too much. I laugh about it, dream about that casual touch. Sex, fire, sick and tired of acting all tough. I’m hooked on all these feelings, I know exactly what I’m feelin”. The production is very slick and has this undeniable groove to the synths and bass line that drives the verses. The chorus is a bit more polished and has a strong beat but the verses just seem to slightly stand out more. Her vocals are a bit clean cut but have an intriguing element to them that a vocally vulnerable moment or high note would’ve elevated. But it is a very catchy track that grows on you with each listen and truly stands out because of her strong storytelling and pure honesty.
