SINGLE REVIEW: Alex The Astronaut – Not Worth Hiding

Alex The Astronaut is a newcomer in the Australian music scene who is making a very impactful entrance. Her unique blend of indie-pop can be best described as somewhere in-between the quirkiness and raw essence of Courtney Barnett and the beautiful melodies and storytelling of Paul Kelly. The Sydney songstress has just dropped her vulnerable new single “Not Worth Hiding” which is one of the most important songs to be out in Australia right now. The coming out anthem explores the emotions behind coming to terms with yourself about being gay and the repressing feeling of needing to hide it. She embraces not being ashamed of how you feel and pleads that it’s not worth hiding and to be open, free and happy. She spreads this message through her honest storytelling which will evoke some pressing thoughts while making you smile at the same time. “I cried when I found kissing boys wasn’t for me. So I tried every trick in the book. I tried talking to the pretty boys and changed the way I look but wearing dresses to impress just left me lonely and upset. And the boys could tell when I looked at her I wasn’t interested in them”. Her honesty and raw emotion is what had me entranced after a first listen. I was so deeply connected and involved in her story that when the brief 2 min 46 second song finished I was questioning why I didn’t have more to listen to. The production is quite simple with just a strumming of a guitar accompanied by some beautiful strings that add to the vulnerable vibe of the song. It’s empowering, uplifting and truly a song that we should be embracing right now with the upcoming postal plebiscite.
