SINGLE REVIEW: Maroon 5 feat. SZA – What Lovers Do

Can someone let Maroon 5 know that this formula of a tropical pop song with a rapper feature is becoming a bit of a bore? And I mean, if you’re going to try and make this your new niche then at least try to make it a good one. “What Lovers Do” is Maroon 5’s new attempt to stay relevant and it fails yet again with a lacklustre hook and predictable production. The song sounds like a direct copy of Neiked’s “Sexual” from the little beat breakdown in the chorus to the melody. The whole time I was listening to the song I was questioning if the other band members were actually doing anything or if it’s just officially the Adam Levine show. As I’ve stated previously in regard to the musical direction that these new songs are going toward, they are sounding more like an Adam Levine solo project rather than a Maroon 5 track. There are no heavy guitars, rhythmic pieces or cool drum solos. Instead its basic pop beats with beat drops that anyone could release. If you just heard this song on the radio and didn’t know it was a Maroon 5 track then you would be convinced it was just another shitty Chainsmokers song. Even SZA sounds boring and generic which is a shock because she is currently a game changer in the RNB world. This song just pays too safe and while it may end up receiving a lot of radio play because of its start power theres no denying that this is an incredibly disappointing song.

  1. I thought the same thing! Sounds like a copy of Sexual and a little bit like Catch Feels or whatever the Pharrel/Katy Perry songs is called.

  2. I totally agree with you. Their music has become non-music. Melodically and lyrically completely uninteresting immature sounding. They have completely strayed from who they are. Totally and completely disappointing. I will not be buying any more cd’s nor going to concerts.

  3. Thanks for posting, this has been stuck in my head trying to track down which song it was.
