It’s been 5 years since P!nk has released a new album and on October 13 she will re-start the clock with the release of her seventh studio album “Beautiful Trauma”. And usually to kick off the promotional period she will release a kick ass pop-rock lead single that screams some sort of rebellion or profanity. But for “What About Us” she questions some of life’s biggest questions in a more subdue fashion. The mid-tempo pop ballad begins with just her vocals accompanied by a piano before introducing a basic tropical dance beat which overtakes during the chorus. Her vocals have always been one of the most recognisable aspects of her career and for this track she offers her emotional pop delivery that made songs like “Try”, “Sober” and “Dear Mr President” some of your favourites. The lyrics are powerful, emotional and honest while she questions the promises people make but don’t keep. “What about us, what about all the times you said you had the answers? What about us, what about all the broken happy ever afters? What about us, what about all the plans that ended in disaster? What about love? What about trust? What about us?”. While this song may be catchy and have a underlining emotional message of love I couldn’t help but be a bit underwhelmed. Her lead singles are always big pop moments and this track just doesn’t live up to the momentum that “Blow Me One Last Kiss”, “So What” and “Stupid Girls” created. I’m sure we will see that playful side of P!nk on this forthcoming record as well as some raw intimate moments that will quickly become fan favourites but I question if we are still going to be talking about this single when that time comes or if we are just going to forget about it? Because honestly, it’s a bit forgettable.
