LIVE REVIEW: Grinspoon – The Tivoli

unnamed

I could make some ridiculous pun about how everyone left the venue with a massive grin on their face after seeing Grinspoon rock The Tivoli but really I would just be stating facts. 2017 sees the iconic Australian rock band celebrating the 20th anniversary of their album “Guide To Better Living”. So in honour of hitting this milestone they’re conducting a massive national tour playing this epic album in it’s entirety which hears some of the songs being played for the first time live. Opening the sold out show with “Pressure Tested 1984” it was quickly noted that they are truly on top of their game at the moment. Lead vocalist Phil Jamieson leaps across the stage with a massive smile accompanied by some interesting dance moves (that I would never judge) and just commands the audience instantly. He graciously thanks the crowd for spending their Sunday night with them and gets straight into it. He takes everyone on a trip down memory lane with fan favourites “DCx3”, “Pedestrian” and “Just Ace”. The banter between the songs was captivating and saw them reliving memories from past shows in Brisbane. Finishing the album up with “Truk” the band disappeared from the stage before an extended encore of their greatest hits. Jamieson reappeared at the back of the venue now dressed in a suit for an acoustic performance of “Protest” which saw some of the fans getting up close and personal with him. Then he returned to the stage for the likes of “Chemical Heart”, “Lost Control” and “Hard Act To Follow” which created some of the biggest singalongs of the night. Closing the show with “More Than You Are” they gave the crowd every little bit of their energy until the final chord and the confetti stopped falling. This was truly an EPIC rock show full of big singalong moments, high energy, sore ribs from the mosh, a very cool light show and impressive vocals. What else could you ask for?

Good supports? Oh yeah they had that too. Good Boy were up first and entertained the crowd with their alternative rock sound that is best described as if Grinspoon and Courtney Barnett had a love child. The lead singer had the crowd giggling with his slighty intoxicated on stage banter and guitar dancing.

Hockey Dad are a name that if you follow Australian alternative rock then you are probably already acquainted with. These guys delivered great surf rock song after song with drummer Billy Fleming captivating you with his constant hair flips. The only confusing thing about their set was the chainsaw sound affects during their in-between song banter. Which had something to do with their roadie dressed in a horror themed butcher outfit but nothing was ever said or elaborated on. I was expecting a random massive Alice Cooper inspired moment but nothing happened.
