SINGLE REVIEW: The Veronicas – The Only High

The Veronicas still exist and that’s a beautiful thing because they released one of my favourite songs of 2016, “In My Blood” which saw them transforming their sound with heavy dance synths. “On Your Side” then followed with a euphoric tropical pop sound which had you wanting to dance while still holding onto their honest lyrics. They’ve finally dropped their next single from their forthcoming fourth studio album and they’ve stripped it back for a beautiful pop ballad that will steal your heart. “The Only High” is minimalistic in production solely lead by a piano, strings and a basic drum beat but it allows the focus to be on their powerful vocals and smooth harmonies. It’s a reflective and emotional track that looks at being young and in love, making bad decisions and allowing addiction to consume you. “Back when we were young and drunk, love could never last forever. The we sobered up, swear my heartbeats all you better. You, you’re the only high I need”. It’s a dark song which is ironic because it’s delivered so beautifully and people may automatically mistake it for a pure love song which it isn’t. This track yet again proves their versatility and vulnerability as artists and sees them maturing as songwriters and vocalists. I’m in love with this song, I’m in love with them and I can’t wait to finally hear this album.
