SINGLE REVIEW: Katy Perry feat. Nicki Minaj – Swish Swish

So let’s forget that “Bon Appetit” was a thing because the rest of the world already has. It flopped, epically but that’s not totally a bad thing because damage control has begun and we have already received a new bop. “Swish Swish” is the song Katy Perry should have lead this album campaign with. It’s a deep-house inspired pop track that is just so playful and brings back that quirky personality we were first introduced to. At a first listen you may be a bit confused because the song is so different to everything that is on mainstream radio right now but it just works. The chorus will be instantly stuck in your head with the phrase “Swish swish bish, another one in the basket. Can’t touch this, another one in the casket”. The off-beat house production will have you dancing along, throwing in some voguing and wanting to teleport to a club. Her vocals are basic, but it works with the song because the production doesn’t need any crazy vocal acrobatics. There is a very cool key change in the bridge which reminds me of Britney Spears bridge in “Do you Wanna Come Over” which is the pop moment you needed in this song. Lyrically the song is a self empowerment track that looks at calling out the haters. The rumour mill has already begun in saying that this is a Taylor Swift diss track and is made as a reply to “Bad Blood” but I’m not going to make any comment on that cause the lyrics are quite vague. Moving on; Nicki Minaj’s rap is pure fire. It’s broken up into two with a little singing stint in the middle which I’m unsure if I love or not yet but its grown on me. It’s been a long time coming for these two to collaborate together and they didn’t disappoint at all. It’s not the big pop track you were expecting, instead its a big House-pop moment you NEEDED. Katy Perry is back. Beware.
