SINGLE REVIEW: Halsey – Eyes Closed

Halsey is going in strong for her sophomore studio album. Adapting a bold sound that takes the next phase of her career straight to arenas and she may just become a household name. She’s already one of social medias biggest influencers with her on point fashion, no filter wording, strong political and feminist views and emotionally killer songs. “Eyes Closed” is the songstresses follow up single and sees her introducing a darker and bolder sound. It’s very evident that The Weeknd co-penned this track with her as it has his fingerprints all over it. The synths and overall production sounds like its been transplanted directly from his last album and the whole time I was just waiting to hear his vocals appear on it. Her vocal delivery is slightly lower than usual but her harmonies collide perfectly with the production. But I was waiting for a big vocal moment that just never came. The lyrics are honest and heartbreaking as it looks at a new relationship where you are still in love with your ex and already admitting to yourself it won’t work. “Now if I keep my eyes closed, he looks just like you. But he’ll never stay, they never do. Now if I keep my eyes closed, he feels just like you. But you’ve been replaced, I’m face to face with someone new”. The track grows on you with each listen but it’s not as captivating as the lead single “Now Or Never’ which didn’t seem to get the chart justice it deserved. I’m interested to hear what the rest of the album will sound like to see if she continues this dark synth trend. Because otherwise this song is good, not great but good.
