I think it’s safe to say that Haim’s comeback has been the longest promotional tease that we have had in a LONG time. Like they’ve gone on a “promo tour” without any singles, they’ve been announced for festivals without a single, they’ve released a live album track and we still didn’t even have a single. I don’t sound bitter at all. BUT they’ve finally given in and released the lead single in all its glory. “Want You Back” is what you would expect from a Haim lead single. It’s rhythmic, bass heavy, groovy and has killer harmonies. However it’s a bit too predictable for my liking. I loved the raw emotion of the live track “Right Now” they released last week and was intrigued by the structure but this song instead gives us exactly what we were expecting. Now, I’m not complaining because I’m grateful they are back but I’m just a bit underwhelmed after the excruciating wait. However the final minute of the song is epic and is a moment that is going to EXPLODE in their live show with the crowd singing every lyric back to them. The song embodies an emotional undertone of trying to win an ex-partner back after breaking up with them. “Just know that I want you back. Just know that I want you. I’ll take the fall and the fault in us, I’ll give you all the love I never gave before I left you”. It adds a different texture to the groovy and upbeat vibe that the production and melody offers. “Want You Back” is a strong comeback for Haim, it’s not the jaw dropping moment I was waiting for it but it will do for now.
