SINGLE REVIEW: DREAMCAR – Kill For Candy
Have you ever found yourself wondering what it would sound like if No Doubt and AFI had a love child? Well you are about to find out. Dreamcar is the new musical project featuring Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young from No Doubt while being fronted by AFI lead singer Davey Havok. This collaboration has been a few years in the making and I’m pleased to say it was well worth the wait. Some were worried that Havok would be just replacing Gwen Stefani as the lead singer of No Doubt but this is very much not the case. Dreamcar transport you back to 80’s synth drenched rock with their debut single “Kill For Candy”. It’s a very nostalgic sound that is missing in current pop/rock experiments. The guys succeed in delivering a ridiculously catchy hook which will grow on you and have you singing along almost instantly. The song has a darker sound to No Doubt’s material with the addition of Havok’s vocals and allows a more experimental production to be undertook. Lyrically the track looks at the dangerous and unhealthy desire for the sweet. “I’d left before you said goodbye. What’s left to say beyond a lie? What’s on our tongues is less discreet. Before it dissolves it’s oh so sweet”. With a modern approach to the 80’s synth rock sound this song does give you a bit of The Killers vibes crossed with recent Panic At The Disco and it just works so well. “Kill For Candy” is an impressive debut and I know I cant wait to hear what else they have up their sleeve.
