SINGLE REVIEW: Julia Michaels – Issues

You probably don’t know the name Julia Michaels but you’ve actually been singing her lyrics for the past couple of years. Along side fellow collaborator Justin Tranter the duo have written some of your favourite songs from the likes of Selena Gomez, Gwen Stefani, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato and Britney Spears. But she’s stepping out of the studio and into the spotlight with her impressive debut single. “Issues” is a offbeat pop ballad that follows the production structure of recent Selena Gomez material with minimalistic frills and more emphasis on the harmonies. So it’s no surprise that the vocal delivery is strong and I find myself questioning why she has been hiding in the studio all this time. She show’s a vocal versatility that most pop artists don’t even have multiple albums into their career. Lyrically its brutally honest which is standard for any of her songs that she has collaborated on but again it’s showing a genuine side to her as an artist which is lacking in the pop world at the moment. “Yeah I got issues and one of them is how bad I need you”. With every listen it grows on you and with this song you do need a couple of listens to digest the unique production, versatile vocal delivery and the relatable lyrics. The fact that this only the beginning for her solo music makes me very excited.
