Fifty Shades Darker may just be the most anticipated film of 2017 and after its predecessor impressed with a dark and sophisticated soundtrack the expectations for this release became very high. Zayn & Taylor Swift deliver the first offering from the soundtrack with one of the most shocking and exciting collaborations to happen this year. “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever” is another sample of the electro RNB tracks that Zayn has released since departing One Direction while this is an experimental approach for Taylor Swift. Dark production layered by oozing synths and smooth harmonies help make this song likeable but the chorus is weak and doesn’t reach the climax that this song desperately needed. The tacky “ooh oohs” sound like they’ve come straight out of a One Direction song and decrease the maturity they are trying to showcase. However it’s not completely a lost cause as the rest of the song is next level good. The production is The Weeknd on steroids, the lyrics are powerful and the vocals are GOOD. “I don’t wanna live forever, ’cause I know I’ll be living in vain And I don’t wanna fit wherever I just wanna keep calling your name until you come back home”. With the star power this song is going to remain on the charts for a long time and while it may not be the perfect pop song it will grow on you and you will learn to appreciate the production risks.
