SINGLE REVIEW: Maroon 5 – Don’t Wanna Know feat. Kendrick Lamar

Over the past couple of years Maroon 5 have shifted from their pop/rock sound and have approached a heavier injected pop direction that is steered towards mainstream radio. I’m not completely complaining because “Sugar”, “Moves Like Jagger” and “Payphone” were absolute bangers but on the other end of the spectrum “Daylight”, “This Summer” and their newest single were sadly born. “Don’t Wanna Know” unfortunately follows  the formula of synths, a repetitive hook and lacklustre but quote-able lyrics making it appealing for radio and housewives ringtones. The chorus doesn’t explode with flair, passion or even resonate the remainings of a band. All I hear is a solo artist trying to break through and not Maroon 5. “I don’t wanna know, know, know, know who’s taking you home, home, home, home, home. And love you so, so, so, so… the way I used to love you, no”. Even though this creative direction was prominent on their last release, songs like “Maps”, “Animals” and even “Sugar” held onto their roots and came to life in their live performances. However this song sounds monotonous, uninspired and could be any emerging new act on mainstream radio. I question you, would you even realise this song was Maroon 5 if you heard it on the radio? And don’t even get me started on why they needed a rapper to feature.

Side note; At least the video was creative?
