SINGLE REVIEW: Little Mix – Shout Out To My Ex
Little Mix continue to deliver the self empowerment jams with the release of their lead single for their fourth studio album “Glory Days” but what happens when their song is a close replica to another girl groups hit single? “Shoutout To My Ex” may be a carefree, empowerful and cheeky ode to the exes who have damaged you in the past but GRL have already done that with the infectious “Ugly Heart”. Now I’m not only talking about the lyrical content because this subject has been tackled thousands of times before but it’s more the production and harmonies. When the chorus hits so does the deja vu. The harmonies and guitar driven hook have been copied and pasted from the GRL song and have slightly been tweaked to give you some newly constructed lyrics. “Shout out to my ex, you’re really quite the man. You made my heart break and that made me who I am. Here’s to my ex, hey, look at me now. Well I’m all the way up, i swear you’ll never bring me down”. While I’ve given quite a bit of shade, it’s time I confess that this song is quite the tune. If you can put pass the heavy similarities between the two songs then you can appreciate how positive and catchy this track is. The girls vocals are unified and while there are no real crazy vocal aerobatics this song doesn’t need to rely on that. It’s a simple, catchy pop song that may sound like another tune you already know but it’s still a solid B+.
