SINGLE REVIEW: Bridgit Mendler – Atlantis
I’m a bit confused by the direction that Bridgit Mendler is going towards for her longly anticipated follow up to her debut album “Hello My Name Is..”. And yes, whilst I’m aware that record was released under her contract with Disney I didn’t expect her direction to be so… erm.. drastic once she went independent. “Atlantis” featuring Kaiydo is the first taste of her forthcoming EP “Nemesis” and shows her experimenting with a more alternative pop approach. Layered with synths and over saturated vocal effects she sounds like she’s drowning along with Atlantis, and not in an artistic way. The production is similar to Imogen Heap but she doesn’t manage to deliver it in the same manner that Heap does. To put it politely she sounds lost. And then she throws in a rap by an irrelevant rapper that seems unjust and doesn’t add any flavour to the song and actually has you wanting to finish the song early. However what I will give her props for is that It’s an ambitious and bold direction to make but sadly it’s one that could see her career drowning. And yes, that was a necessary pun.
