SINGLE REVIEW: Rihanna – Sledgehammer
Rihanna is really slaying 2016. You can’t turn on the radio without hearing one of her songs, she is constantly trending on social media and her Anti World Tour is receiving rave reviews. With her current collaboration with Calvin Harris “This Is What You Came For” comfortably sitting at the top of the charts she’s ready to tackle another market and sing the theme song for the new “Star Trek Beyond” film. Penned by Sia, “Sledgehammer” is an emotionally charged power ballad that allows her vocals to be the main focus but the song stands apart from the Calvin collaboration and her recent R&B influenced singles for the wrong reason. The songs production and vocal techniques are classic Sia and struggle to actually showcase herself as an artist. Without her standard vocal pronunciation you wouldn’t actually realise that this is a Rihanna song and it takes away from the magic it attempts to create “I hit a wall I thought that i would hurt myself, oh i was sure your words would leave me unconscious and on the floor I’d be lying cold, lifeless”. It needs to be less “Chandelier” and more Rihanna. End of story. Its a great salad, will it sit in the top 10? Possibly. Will it sit in the top 5? I doubt it.
