SINGLE REVIEW: Christina Aguilera – Change
My favourite headline for this Friday was something along the lines of “Christina Aguilera Releases New Song For Victims Of Orlando Shooting”. At that moment my body had a bit of a seizure, the tears were in place and I was ready to go to church. “Change” is a touching tribute to the victims of the mass shooting in Orlando that saw 49 people lose their lives and 53 others severely injured. This beautiful ballad criticises the world we live in with the hate that is still visible towards not only just the LGBTQ community but also racial crimes. “Who you love or the colour of your skin or the place that you were born and grew up in shouldn’t decide how you will be treated. Cause we’re all the same when everybody’s breathing”. This song is almost a more direct sequel to “Beautiful” where instead of learning to love yourself we need to now focus on learning to love each other. “Waiting for a change to set us free. Waiting for the day when you can be you and I can be me. Waiting for hope to come around Waiting for the day when hate is lost and love is found”. The fact that we are in 2016 and a song of this calibre needs to be written to plead to people that a change needs to happen for equality is really upsetting. However this is the empowering music that Christina Aguilera was born to release and it’s a massive comeback for the pop queen who recently has been M.I.A musically. Her vocal runs are still flawless and her ballads are still one of my favourite things. So yes “Change” is a beautiful song that will touch and inspire you.
*Proceeds from this song will be donated to the National Compassion Fund to benefit the victims and families of the Pulse shooting in Orlando.
