SINGLE REVIEW: Shawn Mendes – Treat You Better

This is going to be an unpopular opinion with my followers but I have to say it; Shawn Mendes is becoming predictable and a little bit boring. “Stitches” and “I Know What You Did Last Summer” were bangers and a half and his debut album “Handwritten” was a mediocre affair of brilliant acoustic pop and material that should have been left on the cutting room floor. His sophomore album is slated for the second half of the year and the lead single has just dropped and what a surprise it sounds like everything else he’s released. “Treat You Better” starts off with the same chord progression as half of his material and leads into a predictable and cliche storyline of proclaiming that he could treat a girl better than the guy she’s already seeing. Because that’s so original and we’ve never heard a song about that before. “I know I can treat you better than he can and any girl like you deserves a gentleman. Tell me why are we wasting time on all your wasted crime when you should be with me instead”. I just cringed so hard writing those lyrics out and when I listened to it my eyes rolled further back into my head. Of course all of his fans are eating it up and proclaiming it’s his best track yet but here’s a spoiler for you, it’s not.

If ‘Treat You Better’ isn’t a neckbeard anthem, I don’t know what is.
