ALBUM REVIEW: Miley Cyrus – Miley And Her Dead Petz
Okay so Miley Cyrus may have just served us the trippiest album of 2015 and it’s going to leave you feeling a bit confused. With 23 tracks this is one LONG album and with the majority of the vocals sounding like they have been recorded through a bong the sound at times is a tad tedious. “Miley And Her Dead Petz” sees her collaborating with The Flaming Lips and incorporating a psychedelic rock influence into her strange fusion of experimental pop. There’s about twelve skip-able tracks that at times had me going “WTF” or just plain cringing but the magic you have from the other eleven tracks is worth the struggle. “Miley Tibetian Bowlzzz” literally sounds like she’s just doing bowls with Tibetian monks and during “Pablow The Blowfish” she breaks down and cries which is a rare intimate moment but at the same time you can’t help but just roll your eyes. She premiered “Dooo It!” at the VMAS and while the response wasn’t completely positive for this track I can’t help but love it. “Yeah I smoke pot, yeah I love peace but I don’t give a fuck, I ain’t no hippy”. It’s infectiously catchy, a tad trashy but so great that it will be stuck in your head for a couple of hours. She continues to give you the eyebrow raising moments with the vivid “Bang Me Box” which is about her sexual experimenting. “I want to touch it so bad that it’s almost like I can feel it on my fingertips. I want yours inside of me, but don’t forget where I like licking baby”. She then gets super sensual on one of my favourite tracks “Fweaky’. “Shit’s ’bout to get real freaky I can feel it. Don’t you worry, you won’t regret it”. Where she excels on this album is on the raw and intimate ballads. “Karen Don’t Be Sad” is the album highlight with its beautiful and minimalistic production and soaring vocals. “Something About Space Dude” and “The Floyd Song” are close seconds with their interesting vibes and raw emotion. “BB Talk” quickly became a favourite of mine with its cool spoken verses and indie pop hook that looks at falling for someone and not knowing how to feel. “Look, I like when you send me, you know, the, the queen emoji, but when I send back the monkey, you know, the ones with the, the hands over the eyes? That means that shit’s just getting a little too weird for me”. – so relatable!! Is it just me or did “1 Sun” give anybody else Lady Gaga Artpop vibes? Evertime I hear that track I can’t help but picture Gaga singing this because of the vocal delivery and epic alt-dance production. “I once heard Grace Jones say, I have my own concept of time. I always think bout’ that cause I’ve always felt like I was running a little behind”. The albums major flaw is just the excessive amount of tracks, if it was more refined it would have had a larger impact. Some of the melodies seem recycled and exhausted by the completion of the 92 minute album. There are no “Bangerz” on this album that will go on to become a number one single unlike previous tracks but they are fun, intimate songs that give you an insight into the incredible mind that is Miley Cyrus. It’s very interesting and exciting to see her become so immersed in this project and bare her soul not caring how the world may perceive it. You may think its crazy, you may think it’s terrible or you may think its incredible. Either way, She’s just being Miley.
