SINGLE REVIEW: Rihanna – American Oxygen
2015 is the year of Rihanna. She is everywhere you turn and that’s not a bad thing at all. She’s just released her third single from #R8 and this may just become her next global anthem. “American Oxygen” is a dubstep influenced ballad that lyrically looks at a new America and an immigrant coming to chase the American dream. It’s a powerful song that grows on you with every listen. The production is on point and has this uplifting feel to it which explodes during the chorus. “Breathe out, breathe in, American oxygen. Every breath I breathe chasin this American dream. We sweat for a nickel and a dime, turn it into an empire. Breathe in this feeling, American, American oxygen”. The song has been written to inspire and to empower that patriotic side of people. The music video has already caused a lot of political controversy with images of immigration, September 11, Apollo 11, Occupy Wall Street, Black Lives Matter and the inauguration of Barack Obama while she’s dancing in front of an American flag. It’s aimed to inspire and show people how strong the people of America are to overcome such events and stand proud and tall. The three singles Rihanna has released for this album have all been unique and different with no generic club banger to yet surface. It’s allowing everyone to see a more sophisticated side to the songstress while “Bitch Better Have My Money” showed she still had the classic RIRI sass down pat. Okay so we’ve got single number three but we still haven’t got an album release date? I’m starting to get impatient…..
