SINGLE REVIEW: One Direction – Steal My Girl

Even One Direction don’t want to be One Direction anymore. With their new single “Steal My Girl” It sounds like they are trying hard to be someone they’re not. The opening instrumental sounds like its come straight out of the 70’s or 80 emulating the likes of Foreigner, Journey Or ABBA. The harmonies are rushed and not in synch compared to previous material and makes me question where their hearts lie in this project. It’s no secret that Harry, Liam, Louis, Niall and Zayn are five of the music industries hardest working musicians having no real break since 2011. But this song lacks originality and as their lead single if this is one of their strongest songs from their upcoming fourth studio album then I’m worried. It’s great that they are experimenting with sounds and techniques but at the end of the day they are a boy band who are trying everything they can to not be classified as a boy band anymore. I hate to say it but they’ve lost their fun and cheeky side. “Best Song Ever” and “Live While We’re Young” were great releases and charted well because they were fun pop songs. While “Steal My Girl” hasn’t debuted strong on the charts currently sitting at number four on the Australian ITunes charts. One thing One Direction always delivers is an infectiously catchy chorus but even this time that can’t even save it. Next please.
