LIVE REVIEW: MKTO & Taylor Henderson – Brisbane Convention Centre
Taylor Henderson is an artist who is continually growing and watching him take the stage for this show you would have thought he was a complete different person if you had seen him live previously. His confidence and stage presence has improved allowing him to show off his quirky personality and humour on stage. His setlist was made up mostly of covers that he performed on The X Factor including “Some Nights”, “Let Her Go”, “Choir Girl”, “The Horses” and “Human Nature”. He also performed his two singles “Borrow My Heart” and “When You Were Mine” which were both met to massive reactions from the crowd. His vocals were as strong as ever and his interaction between his live band and the crowd was exceptional. Taylor is clearly more comfortable performing than to previous tours and his set was impressive and was a talking point when people left the venue.
Opening with ‘Could Be Me’ MKTO took to the stage with a lot of energy and charisma playing to the ecstatic crowd for just under 90 minutes. Their setlist contained songs from their debut album as well as a few rare b-sides that let the super fans shine. Their energy and stage presence was on point and they kept the audience entertained the whole way through. Vocal wise Malcolm’s was the perfect MC for the evening with his raps sounding exceptional. It quickly became apparent that Tony was possibly a bit under the weather as he was not reaching his falsetto. Their live band brought a lot of energy and made their sound bolder but it would have been good to have seen the boys interacting with the band members more throughout the show. Live highlights included “Wasted”, “American Dream”, “No More Second Chances” as well as their hit singles “Thank You”, “God Only Knows” and “Classic”. The most impressive moment was when they returned to the stage for an encore and covered Lorde’s smash “Royals”. With a tempo change and the added rap techniques this cover was incredible and is worth YouTubing. MKTO delivered an entertaining live show, nothing ground breaking but it was enjoyable and a good night out.
