Disney Takes Over Australia

Disney has taken Australia over for a full week with four of the networks biggest stars in the country for the first ever ‘Disney Fanfest’. Bridgit Mendler, Ross Lynch, Maia Mitchell and Spencer Boldman were the four big names down under undertaking a lot of sightseeing as well as promotional visits to the local media and radio. I was down in Sydney while all the Disney craziness was happening and got to meet some of the Disney superstars while they were in the country. So what exactly happened while the Disney stars were here…

Bridgit Mendler got around Sydney quite a bit taking a bridge climb on The Harbour Bridge as well as having a walk around Circular Quay and Hyde Park before performing on The Today Show, Co-Hosting The Bump and flying to Melbourne for an exclusive meet n greet at Federation Square.

Bridgit Mendler

Ross Lynch was joined in Australia by his family which also double as his band mates as they are all in a band together called R5. They all went on a bridge climb as well as checking out Hyde Park, Circular Quay and Pitt Street Mall in their spare time. Ross had appearances on The Today Show as well as radio and print media. He was promoting his new movie ‘Teen Beach Movie’ which he stars in alongside Maia Mitchell. R5 also had an exclusive show at The Metro Theatre to promote their newest release ‘Loud’.

Aussie Export Maia Mitchell was welcomed home in style with fans turning up everywhere she went to welcome the actress home. She went to the Today Show and many other media outlets to promote her new movie ‘Teen Beach Movie’ which also stars Ross Lynch. The ex-Mortified actress landed her dream role in Disney’s brand new Musical and has won over audiences in America with her quirky and cute personality.

The one Disney star who stayed very incognito on this visit was Spencer Boldman who did very minimal media but was spotted out and about a couple of times throughout the week taking in the sights of Sydney.

Disney Fanfest was however the main event of the whole week with fans packing the red carpet hoping to get a glimpse of their favourite star. Bridgit Mendler, Ross Lynch & R5, Maia Mitchell and Spencer Boldman took the red carpet stopping for all their fans to sign signatures and take as many photos as they could humanly possible. Some fo Australia’s biggest names also hit the Red Carpet to support this event including What About Tonight, Prinnie Stevens and Timomatic. Inside the event there were performances by Bridgit Mendler, R5 and What About Tonight as well as the exclusive Australian premiere of ‘Teen Beach Movie’. You can view all the Fanfest fun on Friday 9 August on Disney Channel from 5pm AEST.

The Disney Fanfest was a very odd event in how the organised and ran the event. To attend you had to win tickets directly from Disney Channel which left fans who missed out having to wait on the red carpet hoping one of the stars would stop for a photo. This also didn’t allow the fans who won tickets to watch the artists perform live. In future years it would be good to see Disney Fanfest open up to an event where you can purchase tickets and attend without winning a competition.

R5 are a pop/rock group from Los Angeles featuring the Lynch siblings Ross, Riker, Rydel and Rocky as well as close family friend Ellington Ratliff. The band have recently released their EP ‘Loud’ which features four songs from their debut album which is due to be released in September. R5 performed an exclusive show at The Metro Theatre which was packed with mostly girls under or around the age of 16 screaming at every word that came out of Ross Lynch’s mouth. The setlist for the show included Fallin For You’, ‘I Want U Bad’, ‘Crazy 4 U’, ‘Here Comes Forever’ and their single ‘Loud’. Halfway during the show the only Lynch sister, Rydel, took over lead vocals for a decent cover of The Ting Tings ‘Shut Up And Let Me Go’. Ross also gave Australian fans an exclusive by performing ‘Crusin For A Bruisin’ from his upcoming movie ‘Teen Beach Movie’. The show was overall fun and upbeat and allowed fans to experience a R5 show in a small intimate setting before the group come back and play bigger venues. Ross is the perfect lead vocalist for this group as he had all the girls drooling and captivated with every word he spoke and every step he took. The band also surprised all the fans by doing a meet n greet after the show for every fan who attended the show that evening which was a really nice gesture to say thank you to the Australian crowd. If you haven’t yet make sure you check out R5 EP ‘Loud’ which is now available on ITunes.

Support act duty for the show came from What About Tonight who were on last year’s X Factor. The groups set was quite average and at points sounded very pitchy and felt a bit awkward. The group performed covers of Justin Bieber’s ‘Beauty And A Beat’ and Havana Brown’s ‘We Run The Night’ as well as two originals. During their new single ‘Time of Our Lives’ it became obvious that the group were lip synching which left a lot of the fans confused.

Ross Lynch and Maia Mitchell were also in Australia to promote their brand new movie ‘Teen Beach Movie’ which saw the premiere take place during Disney Fanfest in Sydney. The plot follows high school couple McKenzie and Brady who is a fan of the retro surf musical movie, “West Side Story.” On the morning of McKenzie’s scheduled departure for boarding school, she and Brady catch one last wave which mysteriously takes them right into “West Side Story,” circa 1962, where they meet all of the films characters and are trapped within the movie. They then have to figure out how to escape from the movie without interfering with the plot which they find very difficult. This movie will Premiere in Australia on Friday August 9 at 7pm on Disney Channel. The DVD will then be available from Sanity on Wednesday 21 August http://www.sanity.com.au/products/2228803/Teen_Beach_Movie
